Equine Herpes Virus-type 1 Information

On January 23, a horse showing neurologic symptoms, tested positive for the neurotropic form of EHV-1 and was euthanized.

The horse was kept at a private farm in Dutchess County, where all remaining horses are being closely monitored for signs of clinical illness.  In addition, temperatures are being recorded from the horses twice a day.  Thus far, there is no evidence of additional cases at the farm.  No horses are moving onto the farm and there have been no recent movements off the farm.

These precautions will continue for a minimum of 21 days followed by sampling of all horses on the location.  The Department is working closely with the farm and the private veterinarians involved and have received full cooperation.

To date, this is the only confirmed case of neurologic EHV-1 in New York State.
